We came here to see the giant ant eater which has become resident on the property. After a hot and dusty walk we were lucky to find him although we didn’t get much more than a view of his striped body. But we were lucky to see him on our one night stay. We were charmed by the Pousada and its rescue blue macaws who decorate the fences; there are also families of hyacinth macaws in the nearby trees plus other bird life. The food is cooked by the matriarch and is utterly delicious- great big legs of lamb for lunch, roast pork in the evening with lots of veg and salads. Brazilians have a sweet tooth and the desserts according to our group were also yummy ( I am not a pudding eater). There is a large pool with a bbq area - the Pousada also has camping facilities and we noticed the only other guests were local and received warm welcomes from the family as did we. The rooms could benefit from a bit of a make-over especially in the electrical department. Switches , plugs and the shower definitely a bit iffy but I forgave all of these things for the warmth of our welcome. I would defiantly recommend staying here at least one night and perhaps going on a ride to see what you can see.

The location, just by the Pantanal gate, is ideal in the dry season, as is has a lot of water, which attracts animals and birds. And the location is very very important in Pantanal. The price (250 reals per day) is a bit cheaper than the surrounding posadas, yet this one has some minuses. First of all, it has no boats and does not organise boat trips. It does have some horses, but not for guests’ use. It can provide a few bicycles in abysmal condition (dirty and with hardly functioning brakes!). So you are mostly on foot. The room is very simple, and lizards & bats can enter it via holes in the wall around the conditioner. The food (included in the price) is decent, although not too variable. The (free) wifi works very badly and only in the small part of the common area. Don't count on it. The owners don’t speak any English, while their son Mateo, who is very helpful and leads animal-spotting tours, does speak some English and is very helpful. As the daily price is not only for sleeping but also for the food and activities, I agreed with the owners’ son that I will pay 1,5 days having arrived in the evening, stayed 2 nights there and departing in the morning. He agreed, yet next morning it appeared that the owner was not informed about it, and was very angry. I understood that money was the primary concern for these people, rather than happiness of the guests. Only after the owner left, his wife called the son and finally agreed to the lower price. So overall – very good location, yet average service, and the owners’ attitude to guests leaves a lot to be desired.

I had such an amazing weekend at Pousada Portal Paraiso in the end of september/13. There I had a nice experience about wild life , because many animals live just close to the pousada. The pousada offers a "animal watching by the night' called "focagem noturna" and canoeying in a river just a few kms from it. The two activities are amazing as we could see many different animals as blue macaus, capybaras,Marsh deer,Burrowing owl, South American Coati and others. I travelled with friends and we stayed in a 5-bed room. It was nice, as we had air-conditioning and a private bathroom.. The meals are included in the hotel reservation. So we had a nice breakfast and lunchtime. The pousada has a nice swimming pool and it offers free wi-fi. The staff was really friendly and overall my friends and I had a great time in Portal Paraiso.

We overnight at this transpantanal huge farm to get some introduction and emersion before we enter the jungle. Wildlife sighting was fantastic: hyacinth macaws, Jabiru storks, caimans, capybaras and tuscans all are easily spotted. We even spotted the Brazilian tapir during sunset with our private guide. The buffet is serviced within a limited time and you have to eat fast. But good selection for vegetarian. Don't bother with your laundry here, for 24 pieces of mostly underwear and socks we paid US$75. No ironing, just sun dry. And the water in their toilet flush is simply disgusting.

We spent the day at Portal Paraíso in August 2012. This review is based on a Day Use, not overnight stay. Portal Paraíso is the first "fazenda" after you cross the Transpantaneira portal. It's on a great location, walking distance from the first wooden bridges, where most caimans, capybaras and birds are. We had a very pleasant day. In the morning, we rode the rented bicycles on the Transpantaneira. The bikes are very old and rusty, might be easier to just walk... When it got too hot, we went to the pool area. There is shade with hammocks, tables, and an observation tower. The bathrooms were clean. We saw many animals around the farm. There are some Hyacinth Macaws living on a tree nearby, lots of parakeets, rheas, other macaws, currasows, monkeys, etc... After the simple but very nice pantaneiro lunch, some of us went fishing at the pond. And at the end of the day, went hiking with a guide. We didn't see a lot of wildlife on this trail (there's a Jabiru Stork nest and we saw a coati on a tree). But the hike was pleasant, with some parts on a boardwalk. But we found a lot of ticks on us at the end of the day! Sunset was spectacular! The kids enjoyed the pool until the very last sun rays of the day. Be aware that they are not near any rivers, so if you want to go on a boat ride, you'll need to go to another farm for that.
